Ok I have named my bunch of characters “The botherers”,
Shot quite a lot of footage today, will try to upload as soon as possible.
1, this is the title for my project in development “Before the beginning, after the end”,
I originally wanted to do a story on the subject matter of dreams, but I developed other notions and believed I would need more substance and contend to execute a good story, I‘d need to try and create something more distinctive and discover something with potential for motion.
2, My parents collect antiques, and antiques have always been around my parents house since I was young, I felt I could incorporate antiques into a basis of a project and structure to a story, I came up with an idea about creatures that lived inside antiques but only appeared when nobody were around…
3, the idea for a story wasn’t terrific but I felt it could generate interest if told well,
I watched classic films which had objects within the film that were used to frame the story, such as Citizen Kane, at the beginning with the snow globe and the end with the sledge.
4, I came up with the idea of the title from the line in citizen Kane, the character mr Burnstein says : “before the beginning, young fellow and now its after the end”, and I felt this quote could be applied to antiques in a way, they already have a history before you collect them, and they will have another history/memory once you have passed them on or sold them.
5, from here I took a step very strongly into the direction of what could trigger the characters to appear, by suggesting the small creatures appeared once an antique dealers cleaned the antiques thus awakening the characters, However, I felt I would need more of a subject matter to frame it together.
6, also to try and investigate the visual feel of the project, I went home with a video camera and constructed antiques and objects on a wooden chest of draws, to discover how the blueprints of the story could be told, it was a visceral approach but it opened up other untaught of possibilities for the story.
7, for instance the characters might think that items with eyes are real or are watching them, like the old teddy bears, or clay pipes which have a face sculpted into it,
8, I also took a chance by going to antiques shops, furniture shops and charity shops to take footage of antiques and items, to really get a good discovery of the territory.
9, I also had the idea of my Dad playing the part of an antique dealer, and give the impression the antique dealer had come back from a shop and unpacks antiques from brown paper bags and polishes them and puts them with the other collections, he leaves the room, to which the characters would appear.
10, for a subject matter it was suggested to me that I could look into Freud’s theory on the subconscious mind, Also Freud was a collector of Antiques and relics, I felt I could build a piece as a reconstruction of Sigmund Freud’s study, which had been massively influential on contemporary thoughts.
11, I get my character development inspirations from allsorts of artists and characters,
Marc craste, Jamie Hewlett, Tim Burton’s number 9 film, the Muppets, pixar film, and so forth. I like to show subtle quality’s from a few of these artists/characters if possible.
12, I’m hoping to have 3 characters finalized over the Christmas holidays,
I have a few sketched up, and digitised, but I hope to add a bit more depth to there personalities and traits
13, from a motion standpoint, a few videos that have inspired me are Pawel Godlewski - ‘Peter and the Wolves, a American Geico car insurance advert, Don’t swim after lunch by Jens Blank and also I have picked up a few things from watching Morph
14, for the Scamperr aspect of the project, I took mainly notes, such as substitute-what else could have been used instead of antiques, Combine -could I combine a different technique such as stop motion or materials. Adopt-could I have changed the scale of creatures and had them collect buildings, Modify-what could happen if the antiques break, Purpose-if antiques were from different countries how that could change the story, Eliminate-what if I eliminate the antique collector and so on.
15, what shall I be doing over the Christmas period?. Well I shall be taking a camera out over Christmas period, to take the footage that I had drawn for the story board and finalize the 3 characters that I have in mind. Possibly Take more technical aspects and issues into mind, and do a lot of reading into the subconscious mind.
16, for my dissertation I hope to discuss objects used in film built around memory, and also techniques in film making. Mostly discussing Citizen Kane and the Tim Burton film 9, drawing parallels from both films, and hopefully these points in the dissertation can give an anchor the whole project. And give everything balance and suppose.
17, bit of an obvious slide, but I try to document everything I do into an archive on my blog, even if its subtle changes its always worth seeing what new directions your work could go to and the blog sort of acts like a shoe box of collections within itself.
18, by the end of the project I would like to show that I have established originality and distinctive interest, developed appropriate methods of contextual research and the study of supporting critical and technical issues. Along with self-directive time and project management.
19, also I would like to show good evidence and research of the territory, project a solid framework and clear final outcome.
20, thank you for your attention and MERRY CHRISTMAS
the dealer could wipe the objects just a light dusting with a cloth these things are rarely cleaned to be bright they would lose their patination which basically is the dirt dust and grime they pick up over the years. The patination is sometimes what gives the objects their charm.
Introduction
1, my name is Greg Ingham, this is the current title for my project in development “Before the beginning, after the end”, I originally wanted to do a project based around cinematography and the subject matter of dreams, but as I investigated into other aspects I developed other notions and thoughts, and it became clear I would need more substance and content to execute a good project, other than just the technique and I‘d need to try and create something more distinctive.
2, My parents collect antiques, and antiques have always been around my parents house since I was young, I felt I could incorporate antiques into a basis of a project and structure to a story, I came up with a story about creatures that lived inside antiques but only appeared when nobody were around…
3, the story needed a bit more critical rigour and wasn’t terrific but I felt it could generate interest if told well, I watched classic films which revolved around items or objects within the film that were used as a framing device, such as Citizen Kane, at the beginning with the snow globe and the end with the sledge.
4, I came up with the idea of the title of the project from the line in citizen Kane, which is “before the beginning and then after the end”, and I felt it could be applied to antiques, for instance they already have a history before you collect them, and they will have another type of history/memory once you have passed them on/sold them.
5, from here I took a step very strongly into the direction of what could trigger the characters to appear, by suggesting the small creatures appeared once antique dealers or collectors polished, restored or cleaned antiques thus awakening the characters, However, I felt I would need more of a subject matter to frame it together.
6, to try and investigate the visual feel of the project, I went home with a video camera and constructed antiques and objects on a wooden chest of draws, to discovered how the blueprints of the story could be told, it was a visceral approach but it opened up other untaught of possibilities for the story.

10, subconsciously the antique dealer polishes the items, and the characters would be awaken, and discover and explore what else is within his collection, and subconsciously adjust objects for instance leave a pocket watch open or leave ink every where from an ink well.

The idea I am now applying to my project is that I will be building a reconstruction of Sigmund Freud’s study, Freud had explained he is not interested in artworks from a formal perspective but in there “subject matter”, in the intention that is expressed and the content that is “revealed“. It was known that Freud collected Antiques and relics,
I hope to generate an interesting conceptual approach by reconstructing an instillation of antiques, collectors items and objects, the story (that is subject to change) is :
An antique collector comes back to his display of antique collections, he has just come back from buying more antiques to add to his collection, he puts his cigar down into a ashtray, takes his pocket watch out to check the time and realizes he is in a bit of a hurry, he proceeds to take 3 antiques out of a brown paper bag, he quickly gives them a clean and a polish, puts them with the other collections on a wooden chest of draws and leaves the room. After this point in the story I’m hoping to portray a subconscious and an imagination aspect, concepts Freud developed which have been massively influential on contemporary thought, I would like vector characters to appear out of the 3 antiques he has purchased to be an expressed aspect and mirror the subject matters of the individual antiques themselves, for instance one of the characters will be scared of the dark and he will Keep turning on the gas lamp antique, the 3 characters I have in mind will walk around the display of antiques and discover certain aspects and the subject matters and what the antiques may have been used for. The characters have come to live due to the antique dealer subconsciously “adjusting” the antiques by trying to apply restoration to them by polishing them.
something that sprung to mind is, that I could have my dad dressed as the antique collector, In a lounge suit. maybe rent out a brown old lounge suit jacket/waistcoat (as my Mum works at Greenwoods tailors so that could be manageable to achieve), the camera pointing towards him, but bellow the shoulders which would probably be ideal so that my Dad probably wont be “acting” as much and going through the motions of taking antiques out of brown paper bag instead,
What I would like to do at the end of the video is to have one of the characters be walking around an ink well, and he accidentally walks through ink, and leaves a trail, so when the antique dealer comes back later to his display of antiques, he spots very very small foot prints around the items…
